The Game Mechanics of Klondike Solitaire

by admin on June 8, 2011

The term solitaire is used to refer to any card game that is played by a single person. Most of the solitaire games are played by pacing the cards in a specific layout which is known as tableau. The common object of the game is to clear the tableau and to move all the cards to a foundation pile.

Solitaire card games can be played in so many ways. One of the most popular types of solitaire is the Klondike. It is also widely known as Patience game.

To play the Klondike solitaire, a 52-deck card is used. One face-up card is dealt on the left side followed by six face-down cards on the right. This is followed by putting a face-up card on the leftmost face-down card in the tableau and then followed by another set of face-down cards to the right. This process is then repeated until the rightmost card in the tableau receives a face-up card. If you count all the dealt cards, you will find that there are 28 cards in total.

The remainder of the cards that are in held deck which are not dealt in making the tableau can now be dealt in different ways. It can either be dealt using three cards or only one card at once. Some can only pass through the deck once while some can place no limit on passes through the deck.

The foundation pile is usually built-up-by-suit that starts with an ace.  Because of this, the foundation pile can also be called as an ace pile. The tableau piles can be made by alternating colors of succeeding numbers. If there are empty piles in the tableau that is cleared, a king pile can be made, first by moving a single king card or by moving a king pile at once. Whenever the stack of cards starting from two to king is made, they are cleared and move to a foundation pile. The game is said to have won if the foundation or ace piles are filled and completed with ace through king.

Based on the mechanics of the game, Klondike looks like a very easy game. But, don’t be fooled. This game can be surprisingly difficult to win all the time. Sometimes the cards end up “unplayable” where they cannot be moved elsewhere. Strategies should also be exercised in which transfers or moves that can open up a faced-down card are given priority. Another trick is that foundation or ace piles should not be made unless the card needs to go to free up a face-down card or clear up an empty pile for the king.

The Klondike solitaire has become a very popular card game nowadays. People don’t even have to play the game using a real deck of cards. The game has transcended to the video game world and has become a staple computer card game in all versions of Microsoft Windows operating system.
